Should you repair or replace your fence?
How to decide whether to repair one fence panel, replace posts or renew an entire fence boundary. Practical steps for Suffolk homeowners.
A single cracked panel is not the same problem as a run of leaning posts. The best starting point is to identify the failed component and check whether the remainder is structurally sound.
When repair may make sense
A small number of damaged panels with solid and correctly spaced posts may be replaceable. Hinges, latches and localised rails may also be repairable depending on condition and compatibility. Ask the contractor to confirm, rather than ordering matching panels first.
When replacement may be more practical
Multiple rotten or leaning posts, widespread rail failure and repeated storm damage can indicate a deeper issue. A contractor may recommend addressing the structure rather than repeatedly patching visible damage.
What photographs should I take?
- Whole boundary from both sides when safe
- Close-ups of the panel, posts and ground connection
- Any gates, corners and changes in level
- Evidence of recurring movement or poor drainage
Wind damage and safety
Keep people away from unstable fence sections. Do not lean on a loose panel or attempt to right a heavy leaning structure without suitable expertise. Describe the timing and extent of damage to the installer.
Compare like with like
A cheap panel-only price is not comparable to a full quote including new footings, posts and waste removal. Use the fencing quote checklist to make the scope clear.
