What affects fence installation costs in the UK?
A single national 'cost per metre' figure is rarely enough. Understand the factors a contractor will consider for a new fence, replacement or repair.
Start with total length and fence design
Long straight runs can be simpler to price than short jobs with corners and gates. Fence height, panel construction, timber treatment, materials, concrete or timber posts and gravel boards all affect scope and supply requirements.
Existing fence removal
Taking out deeply set concrete posts, removing old panels and disposing of waste can add substantial labour and transport. Ask whether removal is included in the written quotation.
Ground and access
Uneven ground, hard surfaces, tree roots, buried services, soft soil and long carrying distances can change installation methods and costs. Don't assume ground conditions can be priced reliably without a site assessment.
Location and material logistics
Contractor availability, delivery distances, access to materials and current supplier prices vary around the country. Avoid comparing estimates unless they include the same scope.
A sensible quote comparison
- Compare materials, fence type and post specifications like for like.
- Check removal, disposal and groundwork are clearly included or excluded.
- Ask whether VAT is included and whether the quotation can change after a site visit.
- Discuss planned start dates, access requirements and warranties.
