Fence installation quote checklist: what to tell a contractor
Use this free checklist to avoid vague fencing enquiries and get clearer conversations about scope, materials, access and disposal.
1. Measure the boundary
Record the approximate total length in metres and your preferred fence height. Note whether there are corners, changes in level, steps, gates or shared entrances. If you do not have a tape measure, an honest estimate is better than an invented exact figure.
2. Specify what is being replaced
Tell the contractor whether existing panels and posts can stay, whether rotten posts need removing, and whether waste disposal is required. Photos of post bases and the whole fence line help.
3. Explain your material preference
Think about closeboard or feather-edge timber, standard panel fencing, composite boards or other finishes. Ask about appropriate timber treatment, fixings, post design and gravel boards. Material performance depends on the actual product and installation.
4. Explain access and site conditions
Side-alley width, steps, changes in ground level, overgrown vegetation, concrete bases, buried services and difficult storage can affect work. Tell a contractor about awkward access early.
5. Check the quote details
- Exact length, height and style included
- Posts, foundations, concrete and gravel board specifications
- Gate hardware and any lock details
- Removal and lawful disposal of old fencing
- VAT treatment, start dates and payment schedule
- Responsibility for permissions, boundary agreements and any property-specific checks
- Defects, guarantees and aftercare—only where genuinely offered by the contractor
6. Keep your choices open
An enquiry through UK Fencing Quotes is free to submit and does not obligate you to use a particular contractor. We may refer your details to an independent business where a match is available; we don't do installation work or guarantee quotes.
